Watch USA vs. Germany at 2:15 EST on UniversalSports.com
Hey, if you have some time off, it might be cool to watch the opening game of the 2010 IIHF World Championships. It's being played in Veltins Arena, on an ice surface inside the home field of Bundesliga club Schalke 04. Over 76,000 fans are expected to watch this game, presumably the largest crowd to ever watch a hockey game. The site is a pay per view, although for one game it's quite small.

I’m watching this right now (sadly not in HD), but this arena is extraordinary – it sounds like a soccer match. 75k German fans shouting constantly. Very glad Universal Sports is carried by Cox Cable, wish they were airing more games. Looks to be USA and Russia so far. Hope they show some Canada, too.
Sadly stuck at work
but went ahead and spent the 99 cents it took to see the game online. Really impressive online quality.
Stadium’s loud and neither team looks very organized.

I’m stuck at work as well, and they’re sticklers for bandwidth use, unfortunately. But I’m following this via liveblog on the IIHF website:
It’s definitely not like watching it, but I suppose it’s something.

Huh. Chris Savage is reffing this game. He used to ref WHL games around here all the time.

Still scoreless, and early in the 2nd period, I believe.

Americans
look like theyre finally starting to get their legs.

And just as I say that
Germany sticks home a rebound after a guy flung one on net on a wraparound.

Michael Wolf from Marcel Muller. Well, at least I got Germany’s potential scorers right. I apparently picked the wrong starting goalie from their roster.

US
just hit the crossbar on a power play. At least puck movement on the PP looks much better than it did in the first period.

Man, I wonder if this is the same IIHF writer as at the World Juniors, because if it is, I should have talked to him more. This is good stuff:
Correction to our first period assertion that we’d never heard louder whistling. Now that the Germans have the lead, the shrill derision heaped upon the American power play is roughly akin to a horde of Nazguls from The Lord of the Rings having a scream-off with a junior high girl’s school attending its first Jonas Brothers concert.
The whistles in European hockey venues is quite distracting and weird to this North American fan. Team USA can’t be liking that.

From what I understand
whistling is the equivalent of booing in Europe.

Buddy did a terrific job of it, didn’t he? I particularly liked the line you referenced, but he seemed to capture just the right mix of fun and occasion. This was a big day for hockey, especially but not only in Germany.

1-0 Germany after 2
Uwe Krupp prefers his 1-0 games to be after 3 OT periods, but he’ll take this one.

FWIW
The IIHF is trying to gouge people by watching on their website: SEVEN EUROS for a single game!

Forty for the whole pop, though, if you REALLY want to watch all the games that’s .70 Euros per game.
TSN.ca should be providing the feed for Canadian games, but likely only available in Canada.

Ryan Carter. The only guy named Ryan in America that wasn’t on the Olympic team.

I wasn't.
And we’re all named Ryan now. Parents in the late 70s-mid 80s had no imagination.

Heh, three of my best friends growing up were named Ryan.

hopefully they can stick one in the net here late.

As they should. They don’t want to end up in the relegation round by finishing last in the group. Goal differential is also a big key in a short 3 game round robin like this.
Puck Worlds: Chasing Pucks from here to Turku.
Wow. A loss at this stage isn’t a huge deal (especially in OT), but it’s still shocking none the less.

Kind of a fluky goal
but the Germans certainly played well. Goalie stood on his head and they won a lot of puck battles, especially early on.

Just so you know, the top 3 in each group of 4 all advance. Finishing lower might just put you on a tougher path to victory in the end. But as long as USA beats Denmark they’ll be through no problem. Beat Finland and they probably would still finish first.
Germany desperately does not want to finish last, so these early games are huge for them.

Thanks, guys.
First unofficial GDT of the site! Will set up another one for tomorrow for Canada/Italy. That probably won’t be very interesting, and will just be in a regular rink, but you never know.
Puck Worlds: Chasing Pucks from here to Turku.
A bit of a shocking result
To those who watched/followed this, was it a case of the Germans playing their typical trap game perfectly and the young USA team just not coping well with trying to break it down?
leaf fan stuck in ottawa, a localized black hole that will suck everything in that area to oblivion.
That was part of it
early on that was the case, later in it was mainly the German goalie playing a great game. We looked very sloppy early on and didnt have our legs, either. Played much faster the second half of regulation, just couldnt get the puck in the net.

OT goal by...
Felix Schutz. Plays for Portland in the AHL, a Buffalo Sabres prospect.
Final attendance tally: 77,803. Might have broken a couple of fire regulations to get that total.

Whoa a ton of people!
It would have been exciting to be there, damn. Germany played well.
Keeping it real. Keeping it fresh. Keeping it real fresh.
