Russia vs. Slovakia Game Day Thread
Click above for the link from Universal Sports to watch Russia take on Slovakia. And feel free to use this thread to talk about the game as it progresses, and the aftermath of it as well. Slovakia is quite a bit different looking from their Olympic team, but boast a lot of familiar names regardless. Russia has nearly every hand they could possibly get on deck, trying to avenge their disastorous Olympic showing.

It isn’t working for me, either. Anyways, I know it works for Americans at the very least. I’ve since found an “alternative” source.

Russia’s getting a lot of zone time but their first line isn’t the sharpest.

Maxim Afinogenov from Viktor Kozlov and Nikolai Kulemin

2-0 Sweden over Norway
Not surprising there, what with no Vikinstad for Norway and all. Goals by Mattias Wienhandl and Erik Karlsson. End of 1st period. Assists to Rikard Wallin and Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson.

Should mention other scores today...
Early games were 5-2 Belarus over Kazakhstan, 6-2 Czech Republic over France. No surprises so far today.

2-1 Swedes after 2. Shots aren’t ridiculously lopsided (24-17).

Slovakia and Russia have such similar flags it’s hard to tell who has more fans there.

Seems like red white and blue are the only three colours available.

Nice power move by Anisimov at end of 2nd to draw a penalty. Just prior to that, Slovakia finally had a push back with many chances after a long delay.

2-2 SWE/NOR
I can’t find a stream for SWE-NOR, which is too bad… because Norway just tied it up at 2 4 minutes into the 3rd.
Henrik Solberg with the goal for Norway. Maybe a third opening game upset on the way?

3-2 Sweden
Matthias Wienhandl with his 2nd, from Paajarvi-Svensson and Niklas Persson. Didn’t take long.
Period 3 under way for RUS/SVK.

I hear Sweden added Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson to their roster today. That gives us Oilers fans a second Swede to root for, along with Linus Omark.

Just curiuos… anyone happen to know the password for the stream on atdhe OR can someone give me a clue where the steam is?
Very close call… Russia cleared it from their crease with their goalie out of the play.

MPS show continues
4-2 for Sweden, with MPS getting the goal. No assists, so it was either a great play or Norway scored on themselves.

Weinhandl gets hat trick
Assist to Montreal prospect Andreas Engqvist. 5-2 Sweden.
Shots are now 43-21 Sweden. HUGE third period.

3-1 Russia
Slovakia hit the goal post, and then Russia cleared it and scored the EN goal. Kozlov with the goal.

A few thoughts....
1. I wish the Czechs would adapt a Blue Jersey as opposed to Red (let the Russians have red)
2. It boils my blood to see Hanlon coaching the Slovaks… I know he did a great job with Belarus and is an amazing International coach but I think the Slovaks should rely on homegrown coaches as they have that kind of depth. To me, it speaks of corruption within the Slovak Ice Hockey Federation (eg. Stastny’s note to Bettman a few years back).
3. I’m always impressed with how hard the Slovaks battle… really, this is a very weak team against an unbelievably strong Russian Team (this isn’t far off their Olympic Team while the other ‘big 6’ are fielding teams not even close to their Olympic teams … interesting fact: Norway has more NHL forwards than the Czech Republic at this tournament)
4. Does Bykov age? He looks like he could lace them up and play right away!
5. If Russia doesn’t win Gold at this tournament… then they really blew it. I am thoroughly impressed with how all the top Russians showed up – no other country can even come close to this kind of participation at the World Championships this year. I’m half expecting Datsyuk to show up as well.
