World Championship: Day 7 Open Thread

BRATISLAVA, SLOVAKIA - MAY 04: Girts Ankipans (R) of Latvia and Daniel Nielsen (L) of Denmark battle for the puck during the IIHF World Championship group D match between Latvia and Denmark at Orange Arena on May 4, 2011 in Bratislava, Slovakia. (Photo by Martin Rose/Bongarts/Getty Images)

A pair of regulation round games kick off the day, followed by two qualification round games later.

Slovenia Si_medium vs. Latvia Lv_medium (4:15 PM local, 10:15 AM EST)

This is a tough one for Latvia...  they played yesterday and lost in heartbreaking fashion.  If Latvia doesn't make it, this game could be the reason why.  Still, it's hard to believe they won't put up a good showing here.  Slovenia played their tough Group A competition quite well, but Latvia has yet to have a truly bad game, losing in a shootout to Denmark in order to be placed here.

Belarus By_medium vs. Austria  At_medium (4:15 PM local, 10:15 AM EST)

In Kosice, Belarus has had at least a day to recuperate from their shocking loss to France in OT.  Austria is where everyone expected them to be.  The good news is that in these first games, no one has had to travel, so the schedulers were kind in that respect.

Russia Ru_medium vs. Denmark Dk_medium (8:15 PM local, 2:15 PM EST)

Tough first draw for Denmark, but they'll take it.  Denmark almost has to win this game, or at least force overtime, in order to move up into a quarterfinal spot by the end of Monday.  Unfortunately for them, this is Russia, and they need the points badly.

Switzerland Ch_medium vs. Norway No_medium (8:15 PM local, 2:15 PM EST)

Norway has played quite well this tournament, and I think this will be a competitive game.  I'm not quite sure what to make of this particular Swiss team quite yet...  this is definitely a key game for both sides.  Norway has already taken down Sweden this tournament, and they played well enough in general to think that they could be this year's surprise quarterfinalist.

Stick around the comments for game updates and discussion.

Really bad news for Latvia right now… Slovenia seems very well disciplined. Anze’s father seems to know his stuff behind the bench.

Things just got incredibly tough for Latvia. They’ll now have to beat Belarus for sure, as well as Austria. Oh boy. Things don’t look good at all.

These games are over. And this goal differential is insane.

Latvia and Belarus are probably now playing against each other for 14th place. Or else they’re hoping Austria knocks off Slovenia for them.

Yeah. Their main problem is the fatigue. They’re not used to back-to-back games and such a tough schedule. Which is why we dreaded the relegation play that much.

Ovechkin will probably help that a lot… it is a very good Russian team and I think they are just waiting for the quarters… whether they finish 1st or 4th in their pool, I certainly wouldn’t want to play them!

Neat stat...

The last 2 times the Czechs went undefeated in the first 2 rounds (eg. 5 and 0 and were ranked first for the quarter finals) they lost both times in the Quarters in an upset. I’m really hoping we lose soon… the drama suits us better! If we do lose, I hope it is Slovakia as I’d be so upset if they didn’t qualify for the Quarters.
